September Rewind

September was a month of trial for me. After walking into a door at the end of August and severely hurting one of my little toes, I continued to run on it. That act hurt worse, and finally I benched myself like a good little runner.  I spent two weeks on the DL in which time I got real close with my bike. I closed out the month by running once again... 13 miles on Sat and another 3.5 on Sunday. The toe felt good so I'm giving myself clearance to proceed (with caution) in marathon training.

MILES OF TRIALS
Sept run miles: 73
Longest run: 19.2
Sept bike miles: 141 + 4 Spin classes
Races:  IVS Half Relay (recap)
   Sept. 9 - 6.55 miles in 58:47
Air Force Half Marathon (recap)
   Sept. 15 - 13.6 miles in 2:06:47
Quad Cities Half Marathon (recap)
Sept. 23: DNS, but PR'd at cheerleading!

IT'S NOT FAT, IT'S FUEL
Monthly weight loss: +4.5 lbs
Seriously?! Take running out of the routine for several weeks and the pounds come clammering back on. Admittedly, I've been lazy on the grocery shopping, meal prep and what I put in my body overall. I need to regain control in October... plan the meals, create the shopping list and make time to prepare meals so they are ready when I'm hungry. I need to hike up my water intake and start counting calories again. I gotta get back in the 150's before marathon day (Nov. 18). That's the goal. Bottom line... it's less painful easier to run when I weigh less. (...and I run faster too)

MIND OVER MILES
Books I'm reading...  I finished Dean Karnazes' 50/50 book just in time to meet him at the Air Force Marathon expo. Highly recommend this book, especially if you're on a quest to Race All 50 like I am. I found his journey to run 50 marathon in 50 states in 50 days enthralling.

The other books that I'm nibbling on are pickups from the library. The Runner's Rule Book (Mark Remy) is a classic that I've never read somehow. An easy entertaining read that I am enjoying.  The Ultimate Bicycle (Richard Ballatine) is teaching me a lot of history and mechanics of the bike, which I need to know if I plan on doing more of these distance rides. I am totally eating up the Triathlon 101 (John Mora) book. I'm so excited to do another triathlon next year and this is giving me some great information for training.  I have only skimmed through Strength Ball Training (Lorne Goldenberg), but it is chalk full of well illustrated exercises to do with big and small balls. I actually think I want to buy a copy to keep in our basement gym.

ROCK ON!!

I haven't been listening to music much anymore while I run. It's become annoying background noise for me... kinda like the kids chattering nonstop. Yeah, I run to get away from that. This past weekend I ran while listening to the football game and I may be onto something there. I was completely distracted (debatable whether that is good or not) and the run flew by. This may be a good option for a long run in the future, especially if I have to do it alone.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"Tough runs don't last. Tough runners do."

MONTHLY CONFESSION
I need to get control over the chocolate consumption. Seriously. Those Reese's peanut butter pumpkins? Yeah, not safe around me... and we got a long way to go before Halloween.

LET'S BE HONEST
What I'm doing right... I took care of my injury (toe). Now that I'm back running, I feel proud of myself for taking the needed timeout.  Running through an injury never makes it better. While it was extremely hard to bench myself, it was definitely the right decision. I stayed focused with cross training on the bike... and my legs haven't completely turned to jello.
What I'm doing wrong... I'm not eating right (see above). I'm not strength training enough. My body craves more yoga. Just do it.

OCTOBER OBJECTIVES
I've had to revise my current training plan. I prefer to have three 20-milers in the bank before marathon day. With the latest injury setback and less than 7 weeks to go until the Route 66 Marathon, I'm going to have to settle for two. With that in mind, I also have to be realistic about my marathon goal... odds are likely I won't be PRing in Tulsa... gonna have to save that for Eugene in the spring.

My workout goals for October...
• Run 5x each week, one of each: interval, easy, tempo, long, and recovery.
• Continue to cross train with 2 bike rides and 2 Spinning classes each week.
• Yoga 2x each week
• Core Strengthening 3x each week
• Boxing once a week (My arms are feeling jiggly all of sudden.)
• I should get my butt back in the pool, although that may be biting off more than I can manage this month.
Races this month...
Oct. 14 - Cupcake Classic 5k... Are you signed up for this FREE virtual race yet? Do it here!
Oct. 20 - ZOOMA Great Lakes Half Marathon (Lake Geneva, WI)... still time to join me for my "birthday race". Use code GLAM5 to get a $10 off the Half or $5 off the 5k.

July Rewind

Hauling booty in the Main Street Mile!
How fast was July?!  I can't believe it's August already... only 55 more days until Marathon Day!  Reflecting back on a month always provides me with good perspective.  I haven't done a Rewind the past few months, and it shows in my state of mind.

MILES OF TRIALS
July miles: 140
Longest run:  20.25
Races: Firecracker 5000 (recap)
  July 4 finished in 28:06
Main Street Mile (recap)
  July 8 finished in 7:24
Chicago Beach Palooza (recap)
July 30 - no idea on finish time.

IT'S NOT FAT, IT'S FUEL
Monthly weight loss:  +9.2 lbs  (o'crap!)
YTD weight loss: -7.5 lbs
This is my biggest FAIL of the month, er summer.  Perhaps that's why I haven't done a monthly rewind in awhile.  Despite the highest monthly mileage of my life, I've managed to gain nearly 10 pounds.  WTH!?  Our summer schedule has been so crazy busy that we're grabbing dinner on the fly more often than not... which means unhealthy calories!  Despite the heat of summer, I'm not hydrating with water appropriately.  And the chocolate cravings have been through the roof!  I'm really starting to notice the weight gain in my daily running pace...  Research shows that a runner gets two seconds faster per mile for every pound they lose.  I've got to get myself reeled in here...

MIND OVER MILES
Books I'm reading... I love to read before bed each night.  Unfortunately, I haven't completed much this summer.  Either I'm late to bed or zonk out after just a couple pages!  Check out my past book reviews here.  Here's the two books I'm currently working on...
"Mile Markers" by Kristin Armstrong

"First Marathons: Personal Encounters with the 26.2 Mile Monster" by Gail Waesche Kislevitz

ROCK ON!!

Not much new on the ipod this month... I really need some new songs.  Suggestions?  In an odd twist, I've logged a lot of miles this month with NO music.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

MONTHLY CONFESSION
The heat totally got the best of me this month.  In one week, I skipped both cross-trains and one run.  Yikes!  But I'm okay with a slack week every now and then, as long as I come back strong the following week (and I did with 42 miles!)

AUGUST ASPIRATIONS
• Chicago Rock 'n Roll Half Marathon (August 14) just enjoy the run.  No time goal.
• Monthly miles goal: 143
• Weight loss goal: -12 lbs
• My Big Girl turns 5 this month & starts Kindergarten.  Try to keep the emotions and tears in check!
• Spin Challenge:  Be a Spinstar by hitting 10 Spin classes.  Are you in on the Challenge yet??  Check it out HERE.

April Rewind

Oshkosh Half in the rain 4/15
Whew!  What a month April was!  And how quickly it flew by.  Reflecting back always provides me with good perspective.  I'm so thankful for the past 30 days of good health, fun visits with family and friends, and the new running friendships I have made.  Life is good.

MILES OF TRIALS
April miles: 108.75
Longest run:  13.1
Races:  Oshkosh Half-Marathon (recap here)
   April 15 finished in 2:09:02
The Jelly Bean virtual 5K (recap here)
April 21 finished in 25:58 (PR!)
Illinois Half-Marathon (recap to come!)
April 30 finished in 2:03:58 (PR!)

IT'S NOT FAT, IT'S FUEL
Monthly weight loss:  +2.5 lbs  (o'crap!)
YTD weight loss: -17.9 lbs
My Biggest Loser contest ended in March, and I really slacked this month on watching the food intake.  Everything is life suddenly got really busy for me.  Meal planning took a backseat, thus proper nutrition faltered.  Easter, my daughter's birthday, carb-loading and rest days for 2 half-marathons probably didn't help either.  In May, I plan to attack this much harder.  HOLD ME TO IT!

MIND OVER MILES
Books I'm reading... I've started the following two books.  Unfortunately, my reading time has been cut this past month.  As soon as I finish them, I'll write a full review for you.  So far, they are both great motivating reads!!
"Run Like A Girl" by Mina Samuels
"Hot (Sweaty) Mommas" by Kara Douglass Thom & Laurie Lethert Kocanda

ROCK ON!!

Not much new on the ipod this month... only two downloads!

MONTHLY CONFESSION
I stole ALL the chocolate from my kids' Easter baskets.  And ate it.  Hmmm, I just wonder where those extra pounds came from?!?!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"A goal should scare you a little, and excite you a lot."  ~Joe Vitale, author

This is exactly how I feel about the 26.2 monster.  In April, I've researched a lot of different choices for my first marathon in the fall.  (I decided St. Louis is too hilly and probably stupid for my first full.)

THE MISSION FOR MAY
• Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K (May 7) - finish the hilly course in under 27:00.
• Monthly miles goal: 100
• Weight loss goal: -9 lbs

• Marathon #1: Make the commitment, pick a race and REGISTER already!!  My goal is to check this off by the end of today. Damn, I'm nervous...

• 31 Days Hard Core: I'm initiating a vigorous core challenge for myself in May... 31 straight days of core exercises, an assortment of workouts from P90X to TurboFire to The Shred.  No excuses!

• I want to relax my running this month before I start my next training program in June.  Forget the times and pace... and just enjoy the run!  I find little "breaks" like this help to refresh my soul, legs and passion.

March Rewind

PR for me!  8:54 pace this race
I'm stealing this "rewind" idea from Racing with Babes.  She's amazingly motivating and just rocked a PR at the National Marathon in D.C.

It's important to look backward frequently to clear the road for where you're going.  It can be so easy to get frustrated in training and especially weight loss.  I find looking back always make me feel good about myself and has a motivating effect as well.  March had its ups and downs...

MILES OF TRIALS
March miles: 104.35
Longest run:  16.1  (a new PR!)
Races:  St. Paddy's Day 8K finished in 44:30 (a new PR!)

IT'S NOT FAT, IT'S FUEL
Monthly weight loss:  -7.8 lbs
YTD weight loss: -19.4 lbs
Trimming weight is not easy while training for a half-marathon.  These hard runs make me hungry!!  I have focused on eating the right foods... protein, whole wheat grains and lots of vegetables.  Most importantly, cutting out sweets.  O-dear chocolate, how I miss thee...

MIND OVER MILES
Books I'm reading...
"Running Well" by Sam Murphy & Sarah Conners
I picked this up at the library, and it has been a wonderful surprise.  Highly recommend.  I especially liked the in-depth review of proper running form.
"First Marathons: Personal Encounters with the 26.2 Mile Monster" by Gail Waesche Kislevitz
I've enjoyed reading this one bit by bit... one chapter each night before I go turn out the lights. It's prepping me (good and bad) for what lies ahead this fall.

ROCK IT GIRLS!!
Song downloads this month...
The Irish one was of course for my St. Paddy's race (and the kids hot potato game!)

MONTHLY CONFESSION
I ate an entire bag of Starburst Jelly Beans in one day... all by myself.  Not my proudest moment.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"Life isn't about finding yourself.  Life is about creating yourself." ~George Bernard Shaw

APRIL ASPIRATIONS
• Oshkosh Half Marathon (April 16) finish with my first ever sub-2.
• Illinois Half Marathon (April 30) just run for fun!
• Monthly miles goal: 120
• Weight loss goal: -6 lbs
• Time Management:  I'm getting slammed in my wedding business as it gets closer to summer (check it out HERE), so I need to improve my time management, or else my runs/sleep/nutrition is going to suffer.  This will be a big hurdle to my success this month.
• Little Girl (my baby!!) turns the big 3 this month!

Thanks to all of you who follow my running rambles here.
