40: Choosing the Right Goal

A new year always bring about new dreams, new goals, new challenges. 2014 is particularly special for me because it's the year I turn 40, a milestone no doubt (and a new age group!).  I feel the need to do something big before I hit 40. As we traveled over the holiday, I had plenty of time to stare out the window and dream. I talked my hubby's ear off and we came up with a handful of options...

RUN A 4 HOUR MARATHON BEFORE I'M 40.
Challenge Level: High
This would take dedicated training way outside my comfort zone. But it's a goal not totally out of the question. My standing marathon PR is 4:16 last spring at Eugene. The question remains, "Can I hit a sub-4 in my life?" What better time to go for sub-4 than the year I turn 4-0. It would have to be a fall marathon, ideally somewhere close to my birthday at the end of October. My dream run would be New York, St. George or Niagra Falls.
Concerns: Summer training and injuries.
A fall marathon means summer training. I am one miserable runner in heat, plus scheduling long miles is a challenge with kids on school summer break. My other concern is whether my body can handle full marathon training. Since the onset of plantar fasciitis this past fall, my feet just don't hold up like they used to.

RACE THE 40th STATE THE YEAR I TURN 40.
Challenge Level: Low
As you know, I'm in the middle of my quest to #RaceAll50 states. The 40th state added to the United States was South Dakota, and oddly enough I haven't run it yet. Adding another 13.1 to my schedule would not be much of a challenge, but it would be a fun play on the number forty.
Concerns: Travel and timing
I was saving South Dakota to run as part of a 'family trip vacation' to the Black Hills. The only Oct option is Run Crazy Horse, but it falls on a Guard weekend, meaning my hubby has to work. So I'd have to go alone most likely. Not sure if I like how that plays out...

FINISH A 70.3 IRONMAN BEFORE 40.
Challenge Level: High/Moderate
This might be ridiculous since I have only completed one sprint triathlon... two summers ago. It was a lot of fun and I felt like I was in the best shape of my life during that time. Yet, I quickly exited the pool once that event was done. Three-sport training is tough to schedule, but yet I feel it's slightly more manageable and interesting than the long miles of marathon training. I like this option soley for the cross training that gives me the flexibility to mix up my training and minimizing injury.
Concerns: Swimming
I have no concerns over the bike and run portion of a 70.3 triathlon, but the swim... 1.2 mile swim! Yikes! I tremble just thinking about squeezing into my swimsuit, much less going that kind of distance. My goal would be to finish the 70.3, but obviously I'd like to give a strong performance as well. I think I would need to hire a swim coach.

FINISH A CENTURY RIDE BEFORE 40.
Challenge Level: Moderate
This has been on my wish list for awhile now. After completing the Venus 62 mile bike ride last summer, I'm 100% confident I am able to complete a Century Ride (100 mile) with proper training. The question now is which event and can I convince Amanda to do it with me?!?
Concerns: Timing and companions
Ideally, I'd like a fall ride. I have a couple events in mind, but both fall on hubby's work weekends which means a little more maneuvering of schedules, but not impossible. Lastly, long distance rides only work well when you have a good team of similar-paced friends to ride with... Who can I convince?

Help me decide...
Which challenge do you think I should go after in 2014?!?

On the last and 12th Day of Christmas, RunWithJess gave to me... endurance to make it through the holidays long run with an 8 pack of GU Salted Caramel gels.

GU Energy Gel provides athletes with a dose of 100 calories to deliver high-quality, easily-digested and long-lasting energy for athletes in every sport and at all levels. Everything inside each packet of GU is engineered to do one simple thing: provide your body with the essential nutrition it needs to keep going for miles and miles and hours and hours. It goes down easy, and it goes to work fast so you don't have to slow down.

What's in GU Energy Gels?
  • Carbohydrates - GU provides athletes with a dose of 100 calories in the form of 70-80% maltodextrin and 30-20% fructose (The ratio depends upon the flavor.). Why the mix? It’s a complex carbohydrate, and studies have shown that some complex carbs are actually digested faster than simple sugars like table sugar and honey.
  • Amino Acid Blend - GU features a unique blend of amino acids to combat muscle fatigue, accelerate the conversion of carbohydrates into usable energy, and maintain mental focus.
  • Electrolytes - Sodium and potassium to replenish what is lost during strenuous activity.
  • Caffeine - Some GU flavors are caffeinated while others are not. We add caffeine for two reasons: It acts as a stimulant and it lowers the perceived effort.

** WINTER MILES GEAR **
Add-on a reminder of WHY YOU RUN through the cold and snow or put those endless miles on the treadmill. Introducing, my newest design in a casual jersey/tee hoodie or performance training shirt...
WINTER MILES BRING SPRING SMILES

The Long-Sleeve Performance Shirts are moisture-wicking 100% polyester. Available in both Ladies and Men's sizing from S-2XL, it's the perfect look for any runner. The ladies shirts have a slender ladies cut. In my opinion, these run similar to other athletic gear, but when in doubt, always size up. (I barely wear a L in Nike brand, and can also squeeze into a L here. My larger friends have told me these are running small so please choose your size accordingly.) This is a custom order, so please remember I do not have extras for exchanges.  $25.00  Sorry, SOLD OUT.

The Jersey Hoodie is the perfect pullover to relish your run - long after it's done. Weighing only 4.5oz, this lighweight hoodie is super comfortable on the go or around the house. The fabric blend is 65% cotton and 35% polyester. Again, my personal opinion... This feels like a long-sleeve t-shirt - plus the hood and front pocket! (Again my opinion... I could probably wear the M in this unisex-sized shirt, but I wanted loose and comfy so I went with the L.) This is a custom order, so please remember I do not have extras for exchanges. $25.00   Sorry, SOLD OUT.

Winter Bling!! These shiny Finisher's Medals for the Snowball Shuffle 8K Virtual Race will disappear quickly, so grab one while you can. Silver glitter ring circles the design, finished with a blue neck ribbon. Virtual Race will be held the week of Jan. 27 - Feb. 2. Grab some friends, shuffle through the snow for an 8K (4.97 miles), and then end with a snowball fight!
$10.00 plus $2 shipping  Sorry, SOLD OUT.

If you're a mother runner like me, it's without a doubt that pancakes are a staple in your home. Kids love them, and I can't deny it... they are extremely satisfying after a winter long run. But most pancakes mixes are full of sugar and ingredients we can't pronounce.  Enter FlapJacked Protein Pancakes! FlapJacked believes that we are what we eat and healthy meals should not only fuel our bodies and be easy to prepare, but also taste fantastic. I completely agree!

FlapJacked Protein Pancake mixes are not only convenient (just add water), but easy to make and healthy for your family. Each package contains 6 servings of 200 calories or less... plus 15 grams or more of protein in each serving. That's the perfect protein punch you need after a good run - but also that hearty satisfying feeling in your belly. FlapJacked is made with the highest quality protein and the finest, all natural ingredients.

There are currently three flavors of protein pancake mixes... Banana Hazelnut, Cinnamon Apple and Buttermilk. Oh-my! Hazelnut is my favorite flavor in just about anything!  If you win the Day 8 prize, you will get to try all three flavors with a FlapJacked Variety Pack!

We are in the second week of #12DaysXmasGiveaways! Every day (Mon-Fri) until December 23, I will be featuring a special running-themed product as a HOLIDAY GIFT to you.

But first, wrapping up last week, the winner from Day 6! Congratulations to KASEY POTTS!  You've won a pair of Marathon Compression Socks from ProCompression. Contact me at runwithjess@comcast.net to claim your prize.

Now let's kick off Monday with the Day 7 prize - a $35 gift card from Road ID.

In today's age of busy and distracted drivers (thank you smartphones), I simply can't explain how important Road ID is. They are truly leaders in the athlete community in educating and providing safety gear. Their flagship product and most well-known is the ID bracelet. Wear one. Should you ever be injured, this identification tag communicates vital information to medical first responders so that they can better attend to your injuries, and contact your family ASAP. It could very well save your life.

The Road ID now comes in several styles and lots of colors - most convenient and my personal favorite - the shoe tag.

New to the Road ID lineup, there is additional accessories that you can add to your bracelet to further identify you... as a runner, swimmer, military, etc. Check it out here. For $4.99, it's a neat addition if you already have a Road ID.

In addition to identification products, Road ID also carries safety gear to keep you visible on the run... Reflective belts/bands, safety lights and even reflective tape!

TGIF! To wrap up this week, I'm happy to feature ProCompression for Day 6.
One lucky winner will WIN a pair of knee-high Marathon Socks! $50 retail value.

The Marathon by ProCompression is a full-length, graduated compression sock, designed to maximize blood flow in your lower leg. The lightweight construction and blend of high-performance materials provide incredible comfort and support. Moisture control keeps your feet dry even during your biggest efforts.

Compression technology helps improve blood flow, resulting in better, more consistent performance with less fatigue and faster, more efficient recovery. In addition to improving vascular performance, Marathon compression socks provide support to critical muscles and tendons, helping reduce inflammation and soreness. Put it all together for the perfect sock for endurance, recovery and travel.
My collection of Marathon Socks (my black pair in the laundry!)
How much to I love these socks? Hmmm, let's see... I own 9 pair (plus 5 of their ankle trainers)! I love the comforting squeeze of their socks, yet lightweight fabric. The fact that they come in a rainbow of colors and designs has me coming back for more. (Join their email list for Sock of the Month announcements!) I'm a short 5'2", so many knee high compression socks bunch up in the back of my knee - too long of sock for my short leg. Even though I wear a size 9 running shoe, the XS in ProCompression fits me perfectly. Perfect length up my leg and the perfect hug on my calf and foot. I found ProCompression somewhere between marathon #1 and #2 and have been wearing them ever since for my long training runs, full marathons and recovery.
