Last Chance Workout

Today was the last day of Mindy's Dietbet. I paid $25 to get in last month, gambling that I could lose 4% of my body weight during the course of four weeks. I had some good days; I had some bad days. I lost and then I gained.  When I weighed in, I was a pound shy of my goal. I decided to put in a good last chance workout. My weight fluctuates a lot - it can change several pounds from morning to night. So I knew it was 100% possible to shave off that final pound before the deadline.

I was suppose to get up at 4:45am this morning for a run. Instead, I slept in... and it felt awesome. I awoke to my five year old cuddled up in bed with me, which is rare occasion these days. Needless to say, I was actually happy to have missed my early run.

But... I still needed a final workout. By mid-morning, I stepped outside and it was already sticky, humid and uncomfortable. I debated the treadmill, the gym or running on our backyard trail. The girls wanted to swim, so we compromised. I created a little circuit workout to do in the backyard. They could play in the pool, while I worked out - still having an eye on them.
10 sets of this workout will get you...
2 miles, 300 jumping jacks, 200 pushups, 100 burpees, 250 superman kicks, 250 ab crunchers
NO JOKE.

Once I began the workout, the kids joined in with me, sprinting across the grass. They did the first couple sets with me... and then the last.  Each time I'd jump in the pool, they would squeal like crazy. They even kept count for me with their diving rings, throwing one out every time I completed a sequence.

Make no doubt, I was exhausted by time this workout was done... and yet, it was fun play time with my kiddos. As humid as it was outside, this is the only fathomable workout I could have done today - happily.

P.S. Yes - I made my final weigh-in goal!
Woo-Hoo! Down 7.2 lbs for the month!

LoseAMarathon Weigh-In #9

When the #LoseAMarathon challenge started, it seemed like September was so far away. It was easy for me to dismiss small results with a simple “next week”. Well, next week has come and gone, and now there are only FOUR WEEKS LEFT! I am not on track to lose the full -26.2 that I envisioned, but I have not quit. I have simply adjusted my goal. I hope to crush the ‘half-marathon’ goal by the Air Force Half Marathon (23 days!), and will aim for the full mary before Thanksgiving. The weight has been coming off slowly, but honestly I haven’t been 100% dedicated either. I’m not disappointed though. Instead of gaining beer/brat pounds like every other summer, I’ve maintained my weight loss from week to week.

In recording the weigh-ins, I know many of you are in the same boat. I invite you to adjust your sail with me. With four weeks to go, give yourself a new realistic goal. It’s never too late to re-energize your weight loss efforts. Comment below your newly adjusted goal to hold yourself accountable... and then GO FOR IT!

We are on the home stretch... and there is a large bunch that are pushing hard to the finish!  I am pulling for each and every one of you! Keep it up!  The participants below have taken charge and produced BIG in week nine.  I was delighted to see some new names in the Scale Crushers! Congratulations!!

LoseAMarathon Weigh-In #7

I was completely distracted this past week with my impending triathlon.  I did a mock-tri and strained my quad and didn't exercise for 3 straight days in hopes that the muscle would heal in time for the tri. It did improve, however, three days of light activity had me fearing my Monday show-down with the scale. Amazingly... I lost another pound! How the... Whatever, I'll take it.

With the tri behind me now and unable to find another one before the end of summer, I'm trying to focus on my next half-marathon (Sept. 15). With the cooler weather this week and the kids heading back to school shortly, I hope to restore a stricter schedule than this summer.  While I've enjoyed the flexibility of my workouts, I'm also missing out on key runs... like tempos and intervals. My sprints yesterday for the #VirtualGames was a nasty reminder that it's been too long since I've hit the track.

Another key motivator?  My mom is kicking my butt in this challenge! She's down -10.4 to my -8.4 pounds. I've got some catching up to do!

As I record weights each week, I am pulling for each and every one of you! It's so motivating to me to see your successes and struggles.  Keep it up!  Weight loss is tough and sticking with it for seven weeks... even tougher!  The participants below have taken charge and produced BIG in week seven.  Congratulations!!

I tallied up some totals and this number is just shocking to me...
3000 POUNDS!
As a group, that is how many pounds we have lost, thrown to the curb, dissolved from our bodies!!  Absolutely amazing! Keep up the great work!

LoseAMarathon Weigh-In #6

LoseAMarathon Weigh-In #4

Consistency is key when trying to lose weight.  To me, it's about more than just pounds. I want a lifestyle change to carry a healthy weight the rest of my life. Sometimes the weight falls off and other times, life happens. Can you relate?  This past week, I had a great week of workouts... but then we went on another 3 day camping vacation. There was plenty of outdoor exercise involved, but also lots of beer and smores.  It all balanced out to hold me flat for the week. The scale literally didn't move an ounce.

Based on the weigh-in results that rolled in on Monday, it was a real toss-up week for people. Some made big strides, others continued to click off the pounds one by two... and then there is definitely frustration out there.  Keep pushing my friends!  You can do this.

Each week, I recognize the top performers on the scale.  Losing weight is a tough task, especially as we get past the first couple weeks.  These participants have attacked the challenge and LOST BIG in week four.  Congratulations!!

LoseAMarathon Weigh-In #3

I worked my butt off this week and thought I did pretty decent on my food choices (especially considering the holiday).  I felt like I was in the zone; however, the scale had another story on Monday morning.  I was only down -0.4 lbs. Seriously, darn it. I'm not too terribly upset though.  I had a big loss (-6.6) the previous week and my body never puts up back-to-back big weeks.  I've been doing this weight loss thing for a while, so I've come to learn my body reactions pretty well. I continue to fight in my quest to Lose A Marathon.  Not satisfied with yesterday's scale reading, I'm determined to make week four count.  Yesterday, I ran 3 miles cross country, did the Day 9 Ab Challenge, rocked a 45 minute Spinning class and ended the night with 30 minutes swimming laps in the pool. Take that!

Each week, I recognize the top performers on the scale.  Losing weight is a tough task, so I am in awe at how these participants have attacked the challenge and LOST BIG in week three.  Congratulations!!

LoseAMarathon Weigh-In #2

My apologizes for the delayed recap on the Marathon Weight Loss Challenge second weigh-in.  The holiday week got a little crazy, but I think I survived another 'social fest' without gaining pounds. We'll see what the scale says about my 4th of July on Monday. You just can't hide those extra bites from the scale. In the meantime, I'm going to run/bike/swim my butt off the next four days to make sure I've done everything possible to be in the negative for my third weigh-in.

In week two, there seemed to be some struggles. Some people still trying to adjust their lifestyles and get on board. Others frustrated with hard work and no results.  But alas, we also had some knockouts this week.  (Read about mine here!)

LoseAMarathon Weekly Weigh-In

This week's weigh-in didn't go quite as planned for me yesterday... and it's totally my own fault.  I did really well all week. I was -4 lbs on Friday and then the weekend hit. We celebrated at two weddings and continued at an after-party. Aw-man, I had way too much fun beer and liquid calories always hibernate in my body. So by time I weighed in on Monday morning, I was back up to where I started the week. Grrrr.  Official weigh-in was -0.2 lbs. I have some ground to make up this week.

The Marathon Weight Loss Challenge closed registration yesterday with 965 participants. I hope everyone sees the journey through and topple some personal goals.  If you didn't register in time, you can still follow the challenge (and track your weight on your own).  It will obviously be my focus for the summer.  Those fall half-marathons (five!) have no idea what's coming from this girl...

Reminder: Weigh-ins are due before midnight every Monday (email me your full name & weight).  If you miss it the deadline, please just wait until the next week to report.

Each week I want to recognize the top performers on the scale.  Losing weight is a tough task, so I am in awe at how these participants attacked the challenge and LOST BIG in week one. Congratulations!

Marathon Weight Loss Challenge

Heather and I before the 26.2 challenge!
Do you have 26.2 pounds to lose?  Join me this summer in making it happen!!  My friend Heather is running her first marathon this fall and is determined to be 26.2 pounds lighter on race day. In support of her goal (and because I need it too!), the Marathon Weight Loss Challenge has been born.

If you're anything like me, I succeed at weight loss when I have someone to report into and hold me accountable for my weekly actions.  Summer is not an easy time.  Cookouts, beer and lots of social activities typically result in me packing on the pounds.  This summer, I vow to do just the opposite... and I need YOU to keep me honest!

What is the Challenge?
The Marathon Weight Loss Challenge runs 13 weeks over the course of the summer. This time frame is simply MY goal, averaging 2 pounds a week in weight loss.  During this time frame, I will track participants' weight loss, offer tips, recipes, a weekly newsletter, mini challenges, success stories and prize giveaways!  You may have a goal larger or smaller than 26.2 pounds... and you may not even run. That's okay - you can still join for the motivation and prizes. The whole point of this challenge is to encourage one another and hold ourselves responsible in summer workouts and food choices.

START - Monday, June 18, 2012
FINISH - Monday, Sept. 17, 2012

Right click these buttons to copy/save and add it to your social mediums.
Let the world know that you're on a mission to LOSE A MARATHON!

Registration is now CLOSED.
I'm sorry if you didn't get registered in time. For administrative purposes, I need to end sign-up, as the challenge has reached nearly 1000 participants!! Of course, I'll be sharing a lot of tips and recipes throughout the summer on runwithjess.com, so be sure to follow along and chart your own weekly progress.

Starting weight will be recorded at sign-up. The official weigh-in day is every MONDAY.  Why Mondays? I find it helps to keep me more accountable over the weekend knowing that I have to face the scale on Monday. Report back your weigh-in to me (via email) before midnight each Monday. Be sure to include your full name and weight. I will keep a spreadsheet of every participant's progress.  I will never share your weight with anyone, although I may share success stories like "Carly lost 3.5% this week!"  I also suggest posting comments and pictures on my FB page or the Group Discussion page to encourage one another - specifically me! Sorry, only active participants will be approved into the Group Discussion page.

How do I win Prizes?!
Throughout the challenge, I will be drawing randomly for prizes... some big, some small, but all targeted at helping you on your weight loss journey.  Each week that you report back your weigh-in, you will earn an entry into the prize pool. You can also score 1 entry per week by sharing a photo and healthy recipe. Only active challenge contestants are eligible for prizes.  If you miss 3 or more weigh-in dates, I will assume you are no longer participating, remove you from the list and you'll no longer be in the prize pool. There is absolutely no benefit to cheating your weigh-in as prizes are not awarded on results, but rather weekly consistency. The only one to cheat is yourself... At the end of the 13 week challenge, there will be a special recognition for anyone who achieves a loss of 26.2 or greater!  I dare you to LOSE a Marathon!

The Final Weigh-In

Today was the conclusion of my health club's 55 Day Weight Loss Challenge.  I joined the contest with a team with four other Sole Sisters in early January. Over the past two months, we struggled together. We celebrated together.  In the end, it was a fabulous team effort!  We lost a total of 100.2 pounds or 11.3% of our body weight.  I'm so proud of all of them!  Weight loss is not easy, but we pushed each other along nearly every single day.  I'm so grateful to my Sassy Slimming Sole Sisters (Kelli, Renee, Laura and Michelle) for helping me push past my comfort level...
I lost -24.9 pounds!
13.7% body weight

How?  It's the most frequent question people ask me through this journey.  The answer is two-fold and quite simple...  Hard Work and Dedication.  (Thanks Dolvett!)

#1 - HARD WORK
in the gym, around the track, in the pool, on the bike...
You need to burn more calories than you consume.  And by burn, I mean sweat your ass off... not a casual jog around the park.  Several times a week, I put in two-a-days (workout in the morning and again at night) to cash in on the magical "afterburn".  The longer and harder you workout, the greater the post-exercise metabolism increase and the longer it lasts. During the final week of the weight loss challenge, I did two-a-days every. single. day.  Exhausted, but I eliminated nearly 5 lbs over a 5 day period (making up for that week-long vacation!).

To give you an idea of my workload over the Weight Loss Challenge, I kept track of my key activities.  Here's what it takes for me to lose 25 pounds in 55 days...
Ran 250 miles
Biked 235 miles
11 Spinning classes
Swam 18,500 yds or 10.5 miles
7 Yoga sessions
4 Elliptical sessions
Numerous circuit workouts

#2 - DEDICATION
to a healthy change in my food choices.
The biggest part of my success the last two months has been a change in my food selection. I'm a firm believer that for weight loss to last, it must be a realistic change.  I can't expect to eat separate meals from my family.  We are an old fashioned family that sits down around a table, says our prayers and eats together... every night.  So the food aspect was a big challenge for me.  No fad diets here. I'm in it for the long haul.

I focused our meals around lean protein and an assortment of fresh vegetables. I minimized carbs and switched to whole grain whenever possible. I completely cut out salt and soda. I have a sweet tooth and every afternoon, it ached. Sometimes I fulfilled it with fruit, and other times, I gave in to chocolate. The most important lesson I learned was balance and moderation. One aspect I had to balance was the checkbook.  Undeniably, eating fresh and healthy IS more expensive when you're feeding a family of four. In the long run, it's a great investment, but still a challenge of current money and time to keep fresh foods in the house.

This latest weight loss success has made me slightly nostalgic. I started my weight loss journey in the fall of 2008 when I topped the scales at (gulp)... 230 lbs.  Seriously, right?  I was miserably obese with a depression that transferred to every area of my life. At the peak of my life with two baby girls, I was falling apart at the seams.  My heart breaks when I think of the hell I put my husband and mother through. They truly are my life vests.

I started walking, then wogging and finally running.  I quit smoking and cut down the alcohol.  It began a gradual weight loss that changed more than just the number of the scale.  Running changed my life.  I fell in love with the run and how it made me feel.  It was contagious, a healthy addiction for once. It made me a better person, a better mom, wife, daughter and friend.  This is why I write about running - it is a passion, a love, that I believe has the potential to change everyone's lives.

Then & Now...

My journey continues... Keep on Running!
xoxo
